Why Do We Shout In Anger?

by Paulo Coehlo / Hindu proverb

A master asked his disciples:
‘Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?’

the disciples thought for a while, and one of them said
‘Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.’
‘But, why to shout when the other person is just next to you? ‘Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you’re angry?’
The disciples gave him some other answers but none satisfied the master.

Finally he explained:
‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.’

Then the master asked:
‘What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, why? Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small…’

And he concluded:
‘When they love each other even more, what happens?
‘They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love.

‘Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.’

Waiting by Rabindranath Tagore

The song I came to sing
remains unsung to this day.
I have spent my days in stringing
and in unstringing my instrument.

The time has not come true,
the words have not been rightly set;
only there is the agony
of wishing in my heart…..

I have not seen his face,
nor have I listened to his voice;
only I have heard his gentle footsteps
from the road before my house…..

But the lamp has not been lit
and I cannot ask him into my house;
I live in the hope of meeting with him;
but this meeting is not yet.

Fanesca Hoy

Quito, Ecuador

We tried this delicious soup in Quito's Mariscal's neighborhood (think Palo Alto). Ecuador's signature fish chowder, Fanesca is a special soup served during the weeks leading up to Easter Holy week (Semana Santa). From my bowl of overflowing goodness, I was able to pick out bacalao (salted cod) beans and grains. And to my delight, the soup was garnished with fried plantains, hard boiled eggs and a floating empanada.

It was so hearty, that I could not (and neither could the boy) finish the bowl. It was very very tasty :)

Honey Iz Sick Soup

A narly chest cold is menacing the streets of Quito, Ecuador. It can turn any healthy human into a sickly, bed ridden, phlegm coughing creature. Luckily, this special cure seems to help..."honey I'm sick soup". Make this lethal concoction as a preemptive strike or to resuscitate any weakened immune system.

Happy germ crusading y buen provecho!

Recipe for Honey I'm Sick Soup
1 badass onion (purple is more lethal - chopped)
4-6 cloves "vampire don't go there" garlic (skinned and whacked with a knife)
1 knob of ginger (skinned and whacked)
2 bay leaves
1 fat cube of magical chicken bouillon (maggi is the best)
1 large "don't mess with me" tater (chopped)
2 b-carotene packed carrots - medium (chopped)
1 large "good for you" uber red tomato (chopped)
1 lightening green pepper (daintily sliced)
a couple handfuls of curly noodles
several good dashes of dried tarragon
salt y pepper to taste

In a good healing pot, add olive oil. Throw in onions, garlic, ginger. Sautee for 5 mins. Add tomato, tater, carrot and green pepper. Cook for 10 mins on low medium. Add the cube of magical bouillon and bay leaves. 4 cups of water (or more if needed). Cover and cook for 25 mins on low. Once the veggies are soft, add a handful of noodles and tarragon. Final step, salt and pepper to taste. (Tip: if the tomato is slightly overpowering...slightly sour, add a teaspoon of sugar, that will even out the taste.)

Verdict: Ah, I'm feelin much better...the honey says.

AND mo better with homemade bread...

Jugo de Lulo Pina y Leche

Medelln, Colombia

I used to have this drink religiously with my almuerzo (lunch) in Cartagena, Colombia. It has a tangy, kiwi sweetness from the naranjilla (called "lulo" in Colombia) mixed with the citrusy tartness of pineapple - add sugar and milk and it becomes manna from the heavens. Oh, sweet magic of the gods. Salud chicos!

includes one gratifying milk mustache

Jugo de lulo, pina y leche
for 2
2 ripened naranjilla
2 C milk
2 slices of ripened pineapple (chopped and core removed)
2 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar

Scoop out the naranjilla pulp into a blender. Add the chopped pineapples (must be very ripe). Blend until the fruit is a fine paste. Add sugar. Taste. Add more sugar if you want it on the sweet side. Add milk and blend for a couple seconds. Serve and enjoy.
